Twelve wetland plant species were tested for their efficiency to bioconcentrate 10 potentially toxic trace elements. A recirculation nutrient culture technique was used to ensure that all plant species were exposed to the same concentration of each trace element. Smartweed (Polygonum hydropiperoides Michx.) appeared to be the best plant species for trace element removal from wastewater due to its faster growth and higher plant density.
