From 75 kg liveweight, 134 Dutch hybrid entire female and castrated male pigs were reared separately in 8 boxes and fed on a normal diet or a diet providing 15% more than the normal diet. Pigs were slaughtered at 100 or 120 days of age and qualitative characteristics of the carcass and chemical composition of semimembranosus muscle (SM) were assessed. The percentage of lean meat was greater (P<0.001) in females than in males (55.09 and 52.84%, respectively).
