Management of cows before, during and after milking and the capacity and performance of milking parlours are examined. Important factors include the design of the waiting area, the degree of automation, milking routines, conditions inside the parlour and entry and exit facilities. Characteristics of tandem, conventional and rapid-exit herringbone, parallel and rotary parlours, special advantages and suitability for particular types of farm are indicated.
