Predation of Dugesia anceps (Platyhelminthes: Turbellaria) on aquatic snails

Physis Secciones A, B y C 53(126/127): B19
Predation of Dugesia anceps (Platyhelminthes: Turbellaria) on aquatic snails
Dugesia anceps was shown to be an active predator on the freshwater gastropods Pomacea insularum and Biomphalaria glabrata in laboratory experiments. There was an inverse relationship between the rate of predation and the size of the snail; only 10% of B. glabrata measuring >7 mm shell diameter were eaten compared with 100 and 80% of snails with shells 1.08 and 3.27 mm diameter, respectively. Only hatchlings of P. insularum up to 4 days old and 2 mm shell diameter were predated.
