Protecting paradise: tourism and AIDS in the Dominican Republic

Protecting paradise: tourism and AIDS in the Dominican Republic

Health Policy and Planning 13(3): 277-286

Six survey instruments were developed to assess the interrelationships among three groups involved in the tourist industry: tourists (n=738), hotel staff (n=100), and Commercial Sex Workers (CSWs) who work near tourist resorts (n=381) interviewed between 1996 and 1997. It was found while most tourists probably do not engage in high risk activities, there were some male and some female tourists who do engage in sexual encounters with multiple Dominican CSWs and hotel employees.
