Protein separation by ion exchange in columns

A packed-column process for the manufacture of whey protein isolate from whey protein concentrate using SP-type cation exchange beads was studied on a laboratory scale. The effect of bead size, loading volume and flow rate on performance was measured. Differences in the protein recovery with changes in loading volume and flow rate were not statistically significant within a given bead type. Protein recovery was greater for small than for large beads.
