Approximately 400 samples of the spontaneous vegetation of an open-cast brown coal mining area north of Halle, Germany, were described in order to obtain information about the stages of succession and the site conditions. The predominant soil textures and the soil pH values were also determined. The pH values of the herbaceous sites ranged from 2.2 to 8.0, and the diversity increased rapidly with an increasing pH value.
