The following article discusses many of the complex issues facing the current herbal supplement industry and their related impact on the quality of products available in the US market. The quality of herbal products depends on ecological conditions, as well as agricultural and manufacturing practices. A lack of quality control exists in the US herbal market and thus reliable consumer information from labels or written texts is difficult to come by. Pharmacology and toxicology of specific herbs are discussed and general recommendations for the practicing health professional are provided.
