Sensitivity of Chironomus plumosus larvae to V5+, Mo6+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Cu+ metal ions and their combinations

Chironomus plumosus larvae, measuring 25 mm in length, were exposed to LC50 metal solutions (20 ml) for 96 h, at a water temperature of 20 degrees C. The tests were conducted in triplicate with 10 larvae per replicate, in Petri dishes. Cu2+ and Cu+ were the most toxic ions, producing LC50 values similar to that for Cu found naturally in the environment in the form of inorganic salts or organic complexes. The LC50s for V, Mo, Mn and Ni indicated that these metals were virtually non-toxic. Metal-metal interactions with Mo, Mn and V usually produced an antagonistic response and resulted in a decrease in mortality of between 3 and 20%, whereas a synergistic effect, which created a 10% increase in mortality was observed between Ni2+ and Cu2+.
