Silvopastoral systems: there is hope for rehabilitating degraded lands in arid and semi-arid India

Silvopastoral systems: there is hope for rehabilitating degraded lands in arid and semi-arid India

Agroforestry Today 11(1/2): 24-26

Like many tropical countries, India suffers from severe land degradation: roughly half of the country's land area (some 158 million hectares) remains under-productive. As both human and livestock populations increase, so does the demand for timber, firewood and fodder, perpetuating the cycle of deforestation and degradation. Today the gap between the demand and supply of timber stands at 55%, firewood 74%, green fodder 77% and dry fodder 51%.
