Surface-softened heartwood tissues in 22 copper-chrome-arsenic (CCA) treated utility poles, in service for 8-23 years, were sampled for soft rot decay. The poles, from four Malaysian hardwood species, were sampled at the groundline up to 30 mm core depth where core samples were retrieved for isolation of fungi, determination of CCA preservative retentions, wood moisture and density.
