Some considerations about the possibilities of increasing the quality and cost-effectiveness of pig production in Slovenia

Some considerations about the possibilities of increasing the quality and cost-effectiveness of pig production in Slovenia

Sodobno Kmetijstvo 31(7/8): 344-349

Farms keeping pigs in Slovenia numbered 73 187 in 1991 and 50 522 in 1997, pigs numbered 265 752 and 364 965 respectively, pigs per farm 3.6 and 7.2, the number of farms with more than 50 pigs 170 and 1826, and the percentage of farms with more than 50 pigs 6.8 and 39.6. The internal Slovenian market demanded 1 000 000 pigs annually, resulting in a shortage of some 200 000 carcasses (350 000 were produced on farms, 450 000 on smallholdings and 200 000 were in-house slaughterings).
