Sources of leaf rust and stripe rust resistance in wild relatives of wheat

Evaluation of wild Triticum and Aegilops species (700 to 1000 accessions) since 1984 over three locations has identified 44 outstanding accessions that maintained resistance to leaf rust and stripe rust. The highest number of these accessions providing long term resistance belonged to Ae. speltoides (S) followed by T. boeoticum (Ab) and Ae. triuncialis (UC). These lines may serve as valuable sources of rust resistance genes when transferred to the cultivated species. Testing at seedling stage indicated the possibility of presence of adult plant resistance genes in certain accessions of these wild species. Work is in progress to transfer the alien rust resistance genes from the identified accessions of the wild species into the cultivated wheat species.
