Studies on a newly emerging protozoal pathogen: Cyclospora cayetanensis

Studies on a newly emerging protozoal pathogen: Cyclospora cayetanensis

Journal of the Egyptian Society of Parasitology 29(2): 575-586

Cyclospora is frequently misdiagnosed as Cryptosporidium. Stool samples were collected from 150 immunocompromised patients. The samples were concentrated and wet mounts were prepared and stained with modified Ziehl Neelsen (ZN) and safranin methylene blue. Cyclospora was detected in 4% of the samples examined and was easily distinguished from Cryptosporidium using the modified ZN stain in which Cyclospora resists staining and Cryptosporidium stains pink.
