Asparagus spears were pretreated with CaCl2 (0, 2 or 4%) + benzyladenine (0, 10 or 20 mg/litre), packed in unperforated high density polyethylene film, and stored for 5 days at 25+or-1 degrees C or 25 days at 2+or-1 degrees C. The storage life indices of pretreated asparagus spears reached 84.4 and 77.8% at 25 and 2 degrees C, respectively, which were 115.4 and 34.8% higher, respectively, than those of controls (no pretreatment).
