F1 hybrids were obtained by crossing the male sterile O. sativa cultivars Zhong 86-44 and Zhong 156 with lines YD1785 and 3-66, respectively, of the distant wild species O. officinalis. Upon backcrossing with the respective female parents, 6 and 7 types of BC1F1 plants, respectively, were obtained by embryo rescue. All were male sterile. Upon further backcrossing to O. sativa and embryo rescue, 4 types of BC2F1 plants were obtained, the majority of which were fertile. Plant morphology was similar to that of cultivated rice.
