Studies on toxin produced by Rhizoctonia solani causing sheath blight of rice

From the culture filtrate and diseased leaf sheaths of rice infected by Rhizoctonia solani, a toxin (phenyl acetic acid) was isolated. This toxin was found to be non host-specific and could induce wilting symptom on non-host plants such as sunflower, lentil, linseed, mustard, gram, wheat, cauliflower, tomato, pea, soybean, onion and lathyrus at 0.01 and 0.1% concentration. The toxin also inhibited the germination of seeds of several crop plants like onion, mustard, mungbean, soybean, lathyrus, sunflower and linseed and also the seed borne mycoflora, namely species of Aspergillus, Stachybotrytis and Myrothecium. On rice plants, however, the toxin had no adverse effect.
