The effect of altering the cation-anion balance of the pre-calving diet of dairy cows on post-calving milk production and health

22 pairs of Holstein cows from the Kairi Research Station, due to calve in April and May were studied. Cows were fed 3 kg/day of a grain-based pellet designed to reduce the dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD). The control diet (i) had a DCAD of 20-25 Meq/100 g DM and treated cows (ii) were fed a diet with a DCAD of 0. Feeding began 1 month before the expected calving date.
