The effect of farm scale aerobic treatment of piggery slurry on odour concentration, intensity and offensiveness

The effect of farm scale aerobic treatment of piggery slurry on odour concentration, intensity and offensiveness

Journal of Agricultural Engineering Research 71(2): 203-211

DOI: 10.1006/jaer.1998.0313

A farm scale treatment plant was used to aerobically treat pig slurry for mean residence times of 1.7-6.3 days. Standard laboratory methods were used to analyse the treated slurry, including parameters such as chemical oxygen demand and volatile fatty acids. Further samples were tested after a period of storage for odour using olfactometric methods, including the determination of odour concentration and offensiveness.
