In pot trials in 1997-98, rice Koshihikari was grown in soil at pH 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 or 6.5 and was given the equivalent of 30 kg N, 12 kg P2O5 and 8 kg K2O/ha. Seedling emergence was more rapid at the lowest soil pH, and culm number/plant at 60 and 65 days after emergence increased as soil pH decreased. Panicle number/msuperscript 2 increased as pH decreased, but there was little effect on grain number/msuperscript 2.
