The extreme incidence of fruit mites in the late summer of 1997 and its consequences for 1998

The extreme incidence of fruit mites in the late summer of 1997 and its consequences for 1998

Fruitteelt nieuws 11(6): 6-8

The causes for the severe problems with Panonychus ulmi and Aculus schlechtendali in apple orchards in Belgium in 1997 are discussed. The main causes were linked with wet weather in spring which made spraying with acaricides difficult. The high temperatures of July-August caused an explosion in the number of mites. Orchards with stable populations of Typhlodromus pyri had less problems. Problems in 1998 can be expected due to the great numbers of overwintering ova.
