Tests on the restoring and maintaining relationships between 9 cytoplasmically male sterile (CMS) lines showed that Xin-4-2A, Xin-4-3A, Xin-4-4A, Ning 4A, AB1 and pol CMS line Xin-4-1A have the same maintainer and restorer, as do S45A and nap CMS line 5021A. RFLP and mtDNA fragment polymorphism analysis, conducted using restriction endonucleases EcoRI, HindIII, PstI and SalI, indicated that the cytoplasm of Xin-4-2A, Xin-4-3A, Xin-4-4A, Ning 4A and AB1 is the same as that of Xin-4-1A of pol CMS, whereas the cytoplasm of S45A is the same as that of Westar S, which has the cytoplasm of nap CMS. Thus, it is concluded that the Xin-4-1A, Xin-4-2A, Xin-4-3A, Xin-4-4A, Ning 4A and AB1 are pol CMS lines, S45A, 5021A and Westar S are nap CMS lines and P24A is an ogu CMS line.
