In 1998 a hybrid with good agronomic performance and hypersensitivity to tomato spotted wilt virus was grown in the greenhouse in Albenga, Italy. In August a survey of susceptible cultivars revealed that >50% of plants showed TSWV-symptoms. The hybrid remained healthy, except for 2 plants showing virus-like symptoms on apical leaves and fruits. Tospoviruses were isolated from these 2 plants (coded P164/6 and P166).
