Using forest plantations to spare natural forests

Using forest plantations to spare natural forests

Environment Washington 39(10): 14-20, 30

The writer discusses the roughly 50 percent of global harvests of raw wood used to manufacture construction materials, paper, and fiber products and examines three alternative models that have been created to meet future demands sustainably. The first model involves acquiring wood chiefly from old-growth and other natural forests and from some managed forests and plantations. Under the second model, wood would be harvested from intensively managed plantations that provide high yields on comparatively small areas of land. The third model depends chiefly on using annual or herbaceous crops such as kenaf, hemp, and bagasse as a substitute for wood fiber.
