Valuation of biodiversity in conservation

Valuation of biodiversity in conservation

Silva Lusitana 6(1): 19-40

This paper reviews different opinions on the issue of biodiversity evaluation and measurement in a land management context. Approaches by community ecologists, taxonomists and conservationists are compared. Two main strategies for biodiversity evaluation are identified. The first, an exclusive process, seeks to achieve the maximum degree of representation of biodiversity attributes in a given geographical unit.
