Valuing ecosystem services: philosophical bases and empirical methods

Valuing ecosystem services: philosophical bases and empirical methods

Nature' s services: societal dependence on natural ecosystems: 23-47

A consideration of both philosophical and empirical elements of nature use and conservation is presented. The philosophical basis of value is reviewed focusing on competing approaches, ethical bases and social decisions. Means of measuring ecosystem values are explored. Ecosystem services and valuation methods are divided into three categories: valuing production inputs; valuing plant and animal life; and non-use values. The debate surrounding marginal versus total value is discussed.
