Three procedures of variance component estimation for predicting breeding values were compared using published data on Pinus maximinoi from a CAMCORE provenance/progeny test least square (LS), maximum likelihood (ML), and restricted maximum likelihood (REML). The estimation by ML showed faster convergence than REML. Heritabilities estimated through ML and REML were similar and superior to those estimated by LS. REML was the most precise method but also the most computationally difficult.
