Variation characteristics of field water consumption and soil water deficit for some crops growing on the rainfed loess plateau of Eastern Gansu

In field experiments on the rainfed Loess Plateau of Eastern Gansu, China, in 1988-1991, irrespective of whether it was a dry or wet year, water consumption by autumn-sown winter wheat appeared to be more dependent upon soil water storage than that of spring-sown maize, potatoes and pearl millet.
