Xanthone biosynthesis in plant cell cultures



Recent Research Developments in Phytochemistry 1: 69-76



Cell-suspension cultures of Centaurium erythraea and Hypericum androsaemum were used as model systems to study the biosynthesis of plant xanthones. A central step in this biosynthetic pathway is the formation of the C13 skeleton, i.e. an intermediate benzophenone. In C. erythraea, benzophenone synthase catalyses the stepwise condensation of 1 molecule of 3-hydroxybenzoyl-CoA with 3 molecules of malonyl-CoA to give 2,3',4,6-tetrahydroxybenzophenone.
