A modern diagnostic dilemma: pelvic malignancy versus actinomycosis. A case report with preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies

European Journal of Gynaecological Oncology 20(1): 74-75

A case is reported in a 40-year-old woman from Italy, who presented in 1996 with a 3-week history of lower back pain and a 2-day history of pain in the lower left abdomen, 11 months after the insertion of a plastic intrauterine device (IUD). Pelvic examination revealed gross enlargement of the uterus and in hard, painful mass was palpable in the left iliac fossa. Abdominal ultrasonography showed a 6 cm mass in the left appendiceal region.
