Nine field trials were conducted during 1990-98 in the Urgell area to evaluate and analyse the performance of traditional varieties of alfalfa (Aragon type) grown in the Ebro Valley and recent introductions coming mainly from Spain, USA (autumn dormancy rating 7 and 8), France (Provence type) and Australia. The dry matter (DM) production of the trials, during the first three years of production ranged from 38.7 t ha-1 to 84.9 t ha-1.
