Abstract
The egg laying pattern and fecundity of B. atrolineatus females on cowpeas was observed for 7 days.The effects of host availability (5, 10, 20, 40 or 80 cowpea seeds) on egg laying, duplicate mating on fecundity and fertility, seed size (small, medium or large) on oviposition, food consumption, development, fecundity and survival to adult emergence were examined under laboratory conditions. The mean number of eggs laid in seven days was 56.73, in a range of 29 to 80. The total number of eggs laid was highest (28.7% of the total) during the first day after emergence. Duplicate mating did not significantly affect the number of eggs laid or their hatchability. Host availability did not affect the number of eggs laid. In no-choice tests, the highest number of seeds were laid on the large seeds (a mean of 25.4 eggs compared to 19.5 and 4.2 eggs on the medium and small seeds, respectively). The larvae consumed more material from the large and medium seeds and thus produced heavier adults, but seed size did not affect the development period or female fecundity. There was no difference in adult emergence from different sized seeds bearing two eggs each, but there were more survivors from the larger seeds when bearing four or more larvae per seed.
