Breakdown of race specific resistance against lettuce downy mildew in Iceberg lettuce and a new approach to cultivation of resistant varieties

Downy mildew (Bremia lactucae) has caused extensive damage in lettuce (Lactuca sativa) crops this season. The problem with the disease can mainly be explained by a breakdown of the race specific resistance in the varieties grown. This has happened several times before and it is now time to find new strategies to control this fungi. Information about the avirulence pattern of growers' isolate could provide better guidance to growers about which variety to cultivate.
