Combining ability in inter-varietal crosses of upland cotton

A 4 x 4 diallel cross experiment was conducted to estimate the effects of general and specific combining ability in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) The general combining effects were highly significant for number of bolls, boll weight and yield of seed cotton, but non-significant for height of main stem. Mean squares due to SCA effects were highly significant for all the characters except number of bolls which was only significant.
