Comparison of the welfare of piglets housed in two types of farrowing pens

16 piglets reared in outdoor systems were studied from birth to the first week postweaning. The animals were kept in farrowing pens on soil or concrete. Eight animals from each pen were weighed and blood samples were taken at 7, 15, 28 and 36 days of age. The plasma glucose and plasma proteins levels were not significantly different between piglets kept on soil or concrete. However, cortisol levels were greater in animals kept on concrete.
