Disseminated Penicillium marneffei infection in a patient with AIDS

, : Disseminated Penicillium marneffei infection in a patient with AIDS. New England Journal of Medicine 344(23): 1763

This paper reports a case of disseminated P. marneffei infection in a 29-year-old human immunodeficiency virus-infected man from Thailand who had a 3-week history of recurrent fever, generalized weakness, poor appetite and weight loss, and had papular skin lesions on his face. A bone marrow aspirate showed numerous bipolar intracellular and extracellular basophilic yeast-like organisms. Some showed clear septation as they were undergoing binary fission, which is characteristic of P. marneffei.
