Effect of animal welfare audits of slaughter plants by a major fast food company on cattle handling and stunning practices

22 US abattoirs were audited by a major meat-buying customer (McDonald's Corporation) with a single visit during the first 6 months of 1999. The 3 variables evaluated in each abattoir were stunning efficacy, insensibility on the bleed rail and vocalization.
