Effects of heavy grazing on invertebrate assemblages in the Succulent Karoo, South Africa

Effects of heavy grazing on invertebrate assemblages in the Succulent Karoo, South Africa

Journal of Arid Environments 43(3): 267-286

Invertebrate assemblages on 3 sites of the heavily grazed Paulshoek communal farm were compared with those on adjacent moderately grazed commercial farms (a different farm next to each of the 3 sites). Invertebrate abundance was consistently higher in the heavily grazed areas, but species richness was greater on moderately grazed areas in 2 of the 3 comparisons, and Shannon diversity was higher in all the moderately grazed areas.
