In plot trials in 1998-99, wheat Iwainodaichi and Chikugoizumi sown in early November were grown with or without application of basal nitrogen at 8 g/m2. Basal nitrogen gave earlier plant development and increased yields from 473 to 518 g/m2 in Iwainodaichi and from 467 to 517 g/m2 in Chikugoizumi.
