Efficient use and uptake of nitrogen for wheat yield in a clay soil in relation to split nitrogen application

The split application effects of N fertilizer on N use, uptake and utilization efficiency, as well as on yield of bread (Giza 165) and durum (Sohag 3) wheat cultivars, were investigated in a field experiment conducted in Assiut, Egypt during 1996-97. Split N application was examined using 15 treatments. Each treatment comprised of 100 kg N/feddan applied in one full dose, or in 2, 3 or 4 equal splits 3 weeks after sowing, stem elongation, heading and/or milk-ripening stages.
