Evaluating the safety and nutritional value of mycoprotein

Evaluating the safety and nutritional value of mycoprotein

Food Technology Chicago 55(7): 42-47

The suitability of mycoprotein for use in the U.S. was evaluated by a panel of experts. The panel considered the information available in an extensive database consisting of thorough analytical data on the identity and composition of mycoprotein, animal studies, digestibility, and nutritional evaluation. Animal toxicology studies did not reveal any health concerns arising from acute or chronic exposure, and in utero exposure studies and multigenerational reproduction studies demonstrated no adverse effect of mycoprotein on reproduction or developmental end points. Moreover, the data showed that mycoprotein can provide support for adequate growth and development, it has high nutritional value, and it is well tolerated in humans. The panel concluded that mycoprotein should be safe and suitable for incorporation into a wide variety of foods for humans, and any risk should be small and completely acceptable.
