The first Bemisia-transmitted geminivirus infecting tomatoes in Brazil was reported in the 1970s. A major outbreak of the disease in tomatoes was observed after 1994 and different geminivirus species have been reported in tomatoes. All geminivirus described in Brazil have a bipartite genome, and until now TYLCV (tomato yellow leaf curl virus) has not been detected.
