Food selection by young Catla catla (Hamilton) and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Valenciennes) in a tropical fish pond

Food selection by young Catla catla and Hypophthalmichthys molitrix for various types of planktonic food organisms was assessed using Ivlev's equation of electivity in order to evaluate compatibility. Silver carp (H. molitrix) was found to be omnivorous, feeding predominantly on phytoplankton in surface waters. Catla (Catla catla) shared the same zone but appeared to subsist mainly on zooplankton. Both being surface feeders and planktivorous, compete for a limited variety of food.
