Inhibition of larval growth in the gypsy moth (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) by venom from the parasitic wasp Microbracon hebetor (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

Extract of the venom glands of the adult female ectoparasitic wasp Microbracon hebetor inhibited larval growth in Lymantria dispar. The inhibition was dose-dependent and at 5 days after injection larval growth was reduced by 50% (by 2x10-3 micro g venom gland protein/mg larval weight). Doses greater than 2.5x10-2 micro g/mg larval weight prevented growth completely and accelerated larval mortality.
