Throughout history, insect pests and diseases have had a devastating effect on ornamental and other economically important tree species. The classic example in forestry, Dutch Elm Disease, decimated elm trees throughout Europe, parts of Asia and in most of the temperate zones of North America and is still a problem in some countries.
