Integrated soil and water management for lowland rice

In field trials in 1994-96 during the rabi (winter) season at Tirupati, India on sandy clay loam soil, lowland rice was grown using intensive puddling or normal puddling, with ordinary ploughing or with soil compaction (rolling with a 500 kg iron roller) and with deep submergence (7 +/- 2 cm), shallow submergence (5 +/- 2 cm) or phased submergence (5 cm for 5 days, 2 cm for 30 days, 5 cm for 60 days and then 2 cm until maturity).
