Intellectual property rights and biopiracy: their implications for tribal medical traditions

A study conducted by the Indian Statistical Institute, New Delhi and WIDA - Koraput (a part of the Tribal Network on Indigenous Medical Systems) which explored the issues around the medical practices of the tribal groups Kondhs, Parojas and Gadabas, in Southern Orissa, India is described. The problems faced by the tribal communities in the context of their medical traditions are discussed and the inadequacies of the adopted measures in intellectual property protection and biopiracy identified.
