The chapter covers: the restructuring of livestock production and trade (animal product demand linked to economic and population growth; livestock intensification); food security (the principle of comparative advantage and the issue of farm size); environmental protection, biotechnology and feeding the world population (the impact of food production on natural resources, farm and ecological costs, the example of the Philippine livestock producers, biotechnology, labelling of GM food, bST, and bioethics); and cultural diversity. It is concluded that livestock production will continue to experience restructuring moving toward intensification and with international trade affecting distribution.
