Intensive viticulture and its environmental impacts: nitrogen as a case study

Inputs of agrochemicals have increased from the beginning of the 1950s up to the mid 1980s. As a consequence in the soils the non-leachable nutrients phosphorus and potassium have accumulated whereas nitrates have left the root zone and subsequently moved down to groundwaters. Monitoring wells showed that nitrate concentrations increased steadily and exceeded the threshold values of 50 mg NO3/litre in a many viticultural areas. Fertilizer trials indicated that N efficiency was low.
