Irrigation scheduling for a sandy soil using mobile frequency domain reflectometry with a checkbook method

The effectiveness of mobile frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) in updating soil water deficit in the checkbook method of irrigation scheduling was investigated. Mobile FDR probes were inserted into the soil vertically and used to measure soil moisture in the upper 0.6 m of soil in two 0.3 m increments. The mobile FDR was used to measure soil moisture in numerous locations in corn, soybean, and spring wheat on selected days for 2 growing seasons. The FDR measurements provided sound estimates of soil moisture throughout a field and allowed for improved water use efficiency and reduced leaching potential.
